BAD BUGS: KEEPING COMPUTER VIRUSES AT BAY

These days, news of computer viruses, worms, and other digital mayhem is almost commonplace. What can you do to make sure you're not a victim?

Don't open an email attachment that you don't recognize. A majority of major virus attacks now spread through email, pretending to be free software or even masquerade as someone you know. If you don't know who is sending you a file, don't open it. Even files from people you know may be dangerous. If you receive an unexpected attachment from someone, send them a note before opening it, to make sure the attachment is genuine.

Keep your system updated. Microsoft is constantly updating Windows. Be sure your computer is in tip- top shape by keeping up with updates and patches. Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ often to check for new releases.

Install, and keep updated, a virus scanner. Having a computer without a virus scanner is like having a house with no locks on the doors. While virus scanners are available for purchase, free ones are available online from Avast! Software and from Grisoft/AVG Software. After installing your scanner, scan your computer at least once a month and make sure that it stays up to date. Most virus scanners currently can be set up to update themselves.

With these three steps, you can be sure that your computer will stay healthy and in great shape!

    TELECOMMUNICATIONS SEMINAR

Big River Telephone held the first of several technology seminars for the eastern Missouri/western Kentucky area on Thursday, Febraury 3 at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center. The title of this seminar was VoIP and Emerging IP Technology, and it focused on the newest technological advances that affect today's businesses through telecommunications.

"The purpose of this seminar was to inform the area businesses of some of the technological advancements that are available using Voice over Internet Protocol, but also for us as a company to learn what other needs businesses may have in terms of telecommunications," stated Kevin Cantwell, President of Big River Telephone. "We can now use this information to provide customized solutions for businesses in our region."

The lineup of speakers included Vince Maniola of Zhone Technologies, as well as Bob Harvey of Metaswitch, which is based in London, England. Other key speakers, on behalf of Big River Telephone, included Kevin Cantwell-President, Tim Fagin-Vice President of Business Development, Kevin Keaveny- Vice President of Engineering and Operations, and Chris Simmons-IT/General Manager.

"We are delighted to be able to share our valuable resources with other business professionals," stated Cantwell. "Exploring new avenues of technological developments will be an essential factor in how much we continue to grow."
